Something Fishy for Father’s Day

Not sure what to get Dad for Father’s Day?

Omega-3 Capsules (Photo credit: bio-sources.com).

Here’s a thought: Fish oil supplements! Granted, they aren’t as sexy as a Tesla, as sophisticated as a Patek or as groovy as a new set of clubs. But they’re certainly less expensive and Dad will love it because while he doesn’t want you to know that he worries about his new wrinkles or memory loss… he notices, and he worries.

Thankfully, the omega-3 fatty acid found in cold water fish oil has numerous proven benefits. Unfortunately, it’s also proven that most Americans don’t get enough omega-3 fatty acid in their diet, and I’m no exception.

I started taking omega-3 fish oil supplements a week ago, and I’m shocked by the results. My hair is noticeably shinier, my nails (famously short, brittle and sad) are stronger and my skin seems more supple.

I realize my anecdotal results may not be enough to inspire you (or Dad) to starting popping three pills a day, but maybe this info from WebMD will.

Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), two fatty acids from the omega-3 family, offer the following benefits:

• Supports normal brain development.
• Ensures nervous system function.
• Maintains eyesight.
• Protects to the body.
• Reduces the risk of developing arthritis, high blood pressure, some cancers and heart disease.

Plus even more relative to the Face Parlour scope, a recent study published in the British Journal of Dermatology suggests fish oil supplements decrease symptoms of eczema by as much as 18 percent. Eczema is a skin condition characterized by dry, itchy, flaky skin.

Still not convinced that giving a bottle of fish oil capsules will fully communicate your appreciate for ole dad? Then consider taking him to his favorite restaurant that serves foods packed with omega-3 fatty acids like salmon, mackerel, walnuts and olive oil.

Dad, if you’re reading this, it looks like you’ll be getting something fishy for Father’s Day.

What does “green” do for your business?

Pow.wow Logo

Forgive me for being MIA recently. The good news is a lot of exciting things are happening, starting with a panel discussion tomorrow night led by Dava Guthmiller of Pow.wow and Noise 13.

The topic is What does “green” do for your business? and we’ll be exploring ideas from the meaning of green to “going green” to greenwashing. The panel includes the following:

Lucas Heldfond | Spring Home
Matt Scullin | New Resource Bank
Brad Coy | San Francisco Real Estate Services, “Ecobroker”
Joel Karr | Group 41
And yours truly.

Although we don’t consider Face Parlour a traditionally “green” business, Dava invited FP to participate because of our emphasis on balancing product efficacy with safety and sustainability, and we’re delighted to be apart of this great event.

Interested in joining us? It’s not too late. You may send your RSVP to events@powwownetwork.org. Event details follow:

Date | Tuesday, June 3rd

Organic Cheaters?

We’ve talked a lot about the importance of truth in labeling and understanding the safety of the ingredients used in our skincare products.

But even we were a bit surprised by Monday’s announcement that Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps, a relatively small, family-operated skincare company, is suing companies they dub as “organic cheaters.”

Dr. Bronner’s lists offenders ranging from Jason, Avalon, Kiss My Face and Juice Beauty to Estee Lauder, Stella McCartney, Ecocert and OASIS. Even if the suit is 100% justified, the approach creates the impression that it is more publicity stunt than genuine care for the consumer. Afterall, many of the criticized companies and certification bodies are taking positive (if not imperfect) steps toward creating safer products and greater transparency.

Either way, this suit underscores the importance of and challenges associated with the establishment of an “unbiased,” standardized product certification body that represents your best interests.

Politics vs. Public Health

KQED’s Forum, hosted by Michael Krasny. (Photo credit: kqed.org.)

According to KQED.org, a new study by the Government Accountability Office finds that White House policies have been blocking and delaying reviews by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Forum host Michael Krasny explores this issue on a recently aired broadcast entitled Politics vs. Public Health at the EPA?. During the informative segment, Mr. Krasny interviews guests representing various sides of the debate including:

Angela Logomasini, Director of Risk and Environmental Policy at the Competitive Enterprise Institute

Barbara Boxer, California Senator and Chair of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee

Sonya Lunder, Senior Analyst with the Research Division of the Environmental Working Group

If you missed this broadcast, I highly recommend listening in at 4 pm today or visiting KQED.org to catch the podcast, which should be posted soon.

I also recommend learning more about the Precautionary Principle and the impact its implementation may have on your health and the cost of your products.

LEED-ing the Way

LEED Certification Seal (Photo credit: designrelated.com).

Today the nation’s first medical spa, Epi Center MedSpa of San Francisco, is celebrating its 10th anniversary (and a belated Earth Day) by opening the first LEED-certified, Eco-MedSpa.

They unveiled their gorgeous, new facility created by architect Justin Martinkovic of Martinkovic Milford and designer Will Wick of Wick Design Group at a posh afternoon tea in the new space.

The medical spa boasts eco-friendly paints, along with recycled fabrics, flooring and countertops that add warmth and sophistication to their suite at 450 Sutter, a building otherwise synonymous with clinical doctor visits and out-patient surgeries.

Epi Center MedSpa also worked closely with Eric Corey Freed and Zem Joaquin, two leaders in the eco-architecture/design industry, to adhere to strict sustainability standards whenever possible.

In addition to offering Obagi and other skincare lines often associated with medical spas, Epi Center MedSpa teamed up with Juice Beauty to create the first line of organic, medical-grade skincare treatments.

From organic facials to aluminum oxide-free microdermabrasion, Epi Center really is LEED-ing the way to going green and getting gorgeous!

* A special thanks to Jani Friedman and Nadine Weil for inviting Face Parlour to the spa’s unveiling.
