Obtaining product. Products are either submitted to us by skin care manufacturers or requested by us from manufacturers. Additionally, we purchase products otherwise unavailable. Face Parlour refuses to accept payment to rate, review or expedite a rating or review of any product.
After an article appeared in the New York Times about copious swag received by beauty bloggers, we thought you may be curious what we do with our excess freebies. In short, we give them to you! We either give them away as part of our swag giveaways, or we attach our contact info and use them as business cards... part of the Face Parlour We-Don't-Take-Extra-Swag Recycling Program.
Prioritizing product. Face Parlour maintains a list of products in queue for review. Rating priority is determined by visitor demand, availability of product information and uniqueness of the product.
Reviewing product. Products are first removed from their original packaging and blind-tested for safety and efficacy. Next editors evaluate the form, function and sustainability of products, and observations are imputed in Face Parlour’s proprietary rating algorithm. Reviews require considerable editorial research and evaluation, based on the following criteria:
- efficacy
- manufacturer claims
- innovation and formulation
- ingredient safety
- packaging and design
- social responsibility
Reviews are conducted at our office. Face Parlour founder, Lauren Fornes, has final say on all product ratings and reviews.
Rating product. Face Parlour rates products on a 100 point scale with 100 being a perfect score. Numeric ratings indicate the following:
- 95 - 100 Excellent.
- 90 - 94 Outstanding.
- 85 - 89 Very good.
- 80 - 84 Above average.
Publishing product. Our focus is on products that work with few or no adverse side effects. Therefore, only the best products receiving 80 points or higher are published.
Rating philosophy. Face Parlour reviews hundreds of products each year. We establish stringent standards for ourselves and rely on the expertise of our editors and distinguished Medical Advisory Board. We support “sustainable skin care” but not at the expense of efficacy and reflect this predisposition in our ratings.
